Rising Sun

The Japanese flag resembles the land of the rising sun as Japan borders Asia on the east and is where the sun rises. For this sculpture I wanted to incorporate the “glitch” aesthetic of pixel sorting and creating geometric shapes rising from the representation of the red sun. I then wanted to personify the sun with a skull oozing abstract forms resembling flames. I chose the skull as my own experience living in a Monastery in Japan was focused largely in meditations on death.
